Biography

His early interest in organ transplantation and HBP surgery resulted in a Hepatobiliary and Transplantation NATO-fellowship at the Universities Paris-Sud (Prof. BISMUTH) and Pittsburgh (Prof. STARZ)L. He lead the abdominal transplant program at the Inselspital University Bern (CH) from 1987 to 1991 (Prof.BLUMGART) and from 1991 to 2016 he was director of the Starzl Abdominal Transplant Unit, University Hospitals Saint Luc and of the UCL Transplant Center in Brussels. His professional career is particular because taking place in 7 different linguistic environments (Dutch, French, German, English, Italian, Polish and Chinese speaking countries), a condition which allowed him to have a good insight in the evolution of surgery worldwide. He worked at bringing together Eastern Western LT worlds. Many invited lectures and visits in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South-Korea and Taiwan led to scientifically very successful collaborative East-West and European Hepatocellular cancer LT efforts. He presided the Belgian Societies of Transplantation and Surgery, Eurotransplant Liver Allocation Committee ,European Society for Organ Transplantation, International Liver Transplantation Society and he is member of the Belgian Superior Health Council. He has published over 410 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 53), authored 32 book chapters and 25 scientific films and made over 800 lectures on national and international meetings. He received the ILTS and ELITA distinguished service awards as well as the TTS “Best investigator driven study” and “Mentorship, Education and Training in Transplantation” awards. He is member the French Academy of Surgery. He has been visiting professor at many institutions (eg. Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic Foundations, the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals. He is honorary director of the Transplantation Institute at the International Shulan Hospital, University of Zhejiang in Hangzhou (Cn) and Consultant at the Transplant Centre University Hospitals Leiden (Nl).
