Biography

Professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at Helwan University and Head of internal medicine department, Executive Director of the liver transplantation Program at Wady El-Neel Hospital, Dr. Rasha Refaie is one of the founding members of liver transplantation in Egypt.

Her career started after she graduated from the faculty of medicine at Ain Shams University in 1993. This is also where she managed to obtain her Masters and Medical degree (M.D) in internal medicine. Dr.Refaie Specializes in gastroenterology and hepatology, but her passion is liver transplantation. Dr. Refaie trained under the supervision of Professor Olivier Boillot (2001) at Eduard Heriot Hospital, she then undertook another internship at Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris, France (2002) under the supervision of Professor Henri Bismuth and Professor Didier Samuel.

Her career in Liver Transplantation started in October 2001 when the first Egyptian program for living donor liver transplantation was established at Wady El Neel Hospital, one of the biggest centres for Organ transplantation in Egypt. Dr. Rasha Refaie was part of the Liver Transplant team that was created by professor Mahmoud El Meteini in 2001 at Wady El Neel Hospital, they then proceeded to launch a new program at Egypt air hospital. The team’s efforts were not limited to Cairo but rather reached various Governorates in Egypt establishing liver transplant centres at Assiut and Alexandria universities in which Dr. Refaie was the responsible transplant hepatologist in the team’s mission to provide the service on a larger scale all over Egypt.

The first domino LDLT in Egypt and the first dual liver and kidney graft are among the many cases that Dr.Refaie has worked on during her illustrious career. She is currently a board member in many transplant societies including:

-The Egyptian Organ Transplantation Society
-The African Organ Transplantation Society
-Elected as a councillor -at- large and member of the board of directors in The Pan Arab Liver Transplant society (PALTS) in 2018 and 2022
-The Egyptian Liver Transplant society (ELTS)
